pbxnsip – Hunt Groups
Once a caller has reached a hunt group, the system begins searching for an extension that will answer the call. Hunt groups can be configured with one to three groups of extensions called “stages.” Each stage can consist of any number of extensions. When a call comes in and the system begins searching for an available extension, it does so in stages, beginning with the extensions from stage 1, then stage 2, and onto stage 3, if the hunt group is configured with all three stages.

pbxnsip – Domain Default Dial Plan
This is the dial plan that users in this domain can use. Note that each user (extension) can override this with their own dial plan based on the requirement. Most of the accounts in a domain will use the default dial plan. If you do not set a default dial plan, you will likely have problems placing outbound calls. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to choose a default dial plan.

pbxnsip – The Default Domain
Before you can begin using the system, you must set up at least one domain. By default, the system installation creates one domain (pbx.company.com) and associates localhost as alias to it. The localhost domain will match all requests that cannot be matched to a domain name within the domain list. This makes it possible to run the PBX on changing IP addresses without changing the name of the domain. This simplifies the setup of the PBX in environments where only one domain is needed. Thus, if you are going to have only one domain, the localhost would be a convenience and would be better left on the system than deleted.

pbxnsip – Log Filename
To request that the system write log messages to a filename, specify that filename here. If you put a dollar sign into the log filename, the system will replace the dollar sign with the current day and automatically generate a new file everyday. This will ensure that the log files do not become too large over time. This is highly recommended;otherwise, do not log to a file at all. Also, be sure to delete old log files fromtime to time so that your file system does not get overloaded with too much logging information.

pbxnsip - Remote Party/Privacy Indication: Remote-Party-ID
This method is described in a draft that expired years ago; however, there is still a lot of equipment outside that is supporting this method. In this case, the From header in the INVITE represents the network number, while the P-Asserted-Identity header is the display number.

deal with any other method. The disadvantage here is clearly that any redirection
information gets lost.

pbxnsip – Remote Party/Privacy Indication: P-Asserted-Identity and P-Preferred-Identity
RFC 3325 describes a way to represent the display number and network number. In most cases, it makes sense to use the P-Asserted-Identity header. In this case, the From header in the INVITE represents the display number, while the P-Asserted-Identity header has the network number. A similar representation can be done with the P-Preferred-Identity header. The PBX only changes the name of the header from P-Asserted-Identity to P-Preferred-Identity.

pbxnsip – Representing the Source
The system differentiates between the following two numbers when presenting a number on the trunk.
1) Display number: This number is the number that the user should see on the display of the phone. In the case of a redirected call, this number would be the original caller-ID that the system sees on the incoming call.
2) Network number: This number is the number that the provider wants to see for billing purposes.
Over the last couple of years, different providers have developed different ways to represent these two numbers.

pbxnsip - Reason 36 - No Vendor Lockin
No Vendor Lock in Nobody wants to be forced to purchase all of their goods from one vendor. In the past this is how companies could take advantage of their customers. With a pbxnsip solution customers and resellers can choose the best of breed components that work best for them. There are a handful of IP phone and Gateway vendors one can choose from to ensure that they can create a complete system.

pbxnsip - Reason 35 - Quality of Service Reporting
Quality of Service Reporting (QOS) can make or break a VoIP deployment. If there is bad voice people will complain loudly since there is a zero tolerance policy for this. Having the ability to see a QOS report for each call via Real Time Control Protocol eXtended Reports (RTCP-XR) is a state of the art feature not found on many systems on the planet! While the VoIP conversation is going on the endpoints can now collect statistics of how the call is performing.

pbxnsip - Reason 34 - SIP trunk Support
SIP Trunking Support In addition to sending calls to PSTN lines via gateways having the ability to send calls to Internet Telephony Service Providers (ITSP's) directly over ones Internet connection without running copper lines is really a great way to save money on monthly telephone costs.
Now it is as easy as 1.2.3 to add a new service provider or have two in case one fails. Having one dedicated for Internation is also ideal or finding one with an unlimited plan is also now possible. Taking advantage of pbxnsip's trunk failover feature enables the system to automatically route the call to a back up trunk in case there is an issue with the primary path with out the user ever knowing. An email is sent to the administrator when this happens so they can take action. If the trunk fails with out failover an email is also sent to the Admin.

pbxnsip - Reason 33 - Multiple Phone Registration Support
Multiple Phone Registration Support means having the ability to have more than one phone registered to the same extension and having them all ring at the same time without putting them in a ring group.
This is a great feature that not many IP systems support. Now you can have your phone at your home office ring as well as a softphone when your on the road, a handheld DECT or WiFi phone in addition to your desk phone. Combined with the hot desking feature users can control easily where their phones are ringing.

pbxnsip - Reason 32 - Hospitality Edition
Hospitality Industry Support Hotels need phone systems to.
pbxnsip supports wake up calls and the ability to clean up an extension with a star code sequence so any voicemails or greetings can be changed once the person checks out.
Our support for UHLL means we can interface with over 70 Property Management Systems that support the www.comptrol.com interface. Then the PBX can interface directly with the front desk console to further enhance the system. This gives us the ability to be able to have the Maid notify the front desk when the rooms are clean and to change dial plans on the extensions to name a few of the advanced features availabe with UHLL support.

pbxnsip - Reason 29 - Call Detail Records
Call Detail Records (CRD)can be emailed every day or sent to the billing server.
CDR's are critical to some companies that need to do billing or to keep track of employees. While we don't offer a billing solution we do partner with some vendors to fill that void and we ensure the system sends out CDR's after each phone call via SOAP, TCP and even email.
CDR's are also kept on the system for retrieval as well.

pbxnsip - Reason 26 - VM Support
Virtual Machine support enables our customers to run the software on virtual machines so they can consolidate servers and save on resources.
Virtual Machines also have inherent failover when done properly so you don't have to worry about having another server dedicated to the PBX the VM Farm takes care of it. One must ensure that it is a real virtual machine that you can bind one core to one instance of pbxnsip and an OS. This ensures your audio streams will not be impeded by the OS. The small memory footprint makes it possible to failover within a second, not loosing a call or even a TCP/TLS connection! That Rocks!

pbxnsip - Reason 22 - Call center features
Call center features are a must today since every company is a mini call center.
How intimidating is it when we hear your call maybe recorded for customer service is heard when you call a company. Now you can be that company! Or how about listening in on a call or using the barge and teach mode features of the system to increase productivity. Call Barge is a great productivity tool when someone is on a call and needs help. A simple IM instructing someone to jump in the call is much easier than putting the call on hold and calling that person. Agent groups or waiting queues enable customers hold on for service instead of leaving a voicemail and calling back.

pbxnsip - Reason 21 - High scalability
High scalability is a must today. In the old TDM system what did one do if they purchased a 4*16 system and the 17th person joined the company or they needed a 5th trunk? They needed to get the fork lift out and remove the PBX and get another one! However with a modern VoIP communications system it is as simple as putting a new key in to add the necessary extensions or potentially adding a PSTN daughter card.

Granted that may not be as many as some of the legacy based PBX based systems but we are getting there and are operating in Internet time. We offer many features the legacy systems can’t provide like presence and we are quickly adding features like Video that they never could do. Other features like conferencing, call recording, whisper and barge were also very rare on non-call center specific systems.

This makes pbxnsip the voice communications platform of choice. Some customers love or hate a particular IP phone or provider and by providing a choice everyone is happy. Standards like SIP is the glue that enables us to do this.

Great ROI!
Cost justifying any new expense today is crucial in today's tough economic times. pbxnsip changed their pricing model and added a basic edition to help customers who didn’t need advanced features to be able to afford a great entry level VoIP system without breaking the bank.
We also introduced monthly extension based pricing for our service providers who couldn’t afford to purchase a hosted license. We are also looking at other creative pricing models to enable you to only pay for the software you need a la carte.

Comptrol/Executek to handle our hospitality needs when we explore into the hospitality industry. Sangoma takes care of our customers PSTN interconnection needs by providing interfaces to Alexander Graham Bells network. Globalscale technologies to enable us to enter the wonderful world of plug computing. Vertical technologies and Metropolis to help fulfill our billing needs. Voiceoperator.com to do just that. Portech GSM gateways to interface with the cellular networks that are growing so fast.

Crucially we support UDP and TCP.

pbxnsip - Reason 8 - Stability
Stability
Stability – companies rely on their communications systems and they can’t go down. If we lose touch with the email or the web server life goes on. However if a company’s phone system goes down they could lose thousands of dollars an hour. Some companies have been known to even go out of business due to extended outages of their phone systems.
Due to our background, our product is “German Engineered” and is extremely stable. Some comments from our customers say how unbelievably rock solid this product is. It is truly a product that you set up and then forget about it since it just runs.
Our product stability is our proudest accomplishment. Failure is not an option when your hosting your VoIP services or even for enterprises.
Traditional PBX's had a reputation for dependability and we are a big believer in that failure is not an option. When introducing new features there is always a risk to stability and if we do have any sudden issues that appear we react very quickly to address them to make sure they get resolved with the highest priority.

pbxnsip - Reason 6 - Session Border Controller
Session Border Controller
Built in Session Border Controller is another very important feature of a VoIP system.
The SBC enables remote phones with private IP addresses can connect to the system that are sitting behind NAT devices that don’t need to be tunneled or use a VPN for two way voice communication to be established. The SBC is critical in ensuring that when a phone is connected anywhere in the Internet it will be able to work. The SBC also has Denial of Service technology to make sure if the system does get besieged with requests it has logic to thwart off any attacks and make sure the current users don’t even know the system is being bothered.
Automatically adding the attackers to an access list ensures they don’t get into the system. DOS technology is critical to keep a VoIP system alive. External SBC's are not cheap and we save our clients thousands of dollars with this feature alone.

Failure is not an option when your hosting your VoIP services or even for enterprises. Traditional PBX's had a reputation for dependability and we are a big believer in that failure is not an option. When introducing new features there is always a risk to stability and if we do have any sudden issues that appear we react very quickly to address them to make sure they get resolved with the highest priority.

pbxnsip - Reason 2
Cell Phone Integration
Cell phone integration is key in today's world where everyone has a cell phone or two!
If the pbx extension can’t twin to a cell phone what good is it! If the system
can’t recognize your cell number and give you a personal touch then get rid of it!
If you can’t use a GSM gateway for cell to cell calls then your not taking advantage of the latest technologies.
The system should also be able to call you when there is a voicemail. Having the ability to walk into the office and hit a button and pull the call into your desk phone that was forked to your cell phone is also a must.
Transferring a call to the cell phone is imperative when you want to leave the office and continue the call or if you want to transfer a call to an employee you see walking out the door. You just need to know their extension number and not their cell phone number. Let the system keep track of that. Having the ability to transfer a call that was sent to your cell phone back to the PBX is coming as well as conferencing in other parties in the pox to the cell phone.

pbxnsip Music on Hold Application
Calling All Windows Users!
The pbxnsip Paging and Music on Hold application brings a new light to the source of music on hold for Windows users.
The Music on Hold Application should be deployed on the same server or PC as the pbxnsip application. The application listens to the audio input and converts it into a Music On Hold source which pbxnsip can use.
The Music on Hold Application simply takes audio from the Windows recording source.
Once the Application is configured, all you need to do is setup a new Music On Hold source on pbxnsip, under the MOH tab at System Level. Create the music on hold type as "RTP Stream" and add the port 6000 (default port).
Use the following settings to configure the Music on Hold source:
Name: Name the MOH Source
Type: From the dropdown, choose RTP Stream
Domain: Choose the domain(s) that will be using the Music on Hold
Port Number: The default port is 6000

Watch out for new posts on how you can use this application.
